TACIT - GRADUATION COLLECTION

What is a taboo, and what is its function in our society?

What happens when a taboo is broken? What is the influence of taboos on the collective consciousness?

The “TACIT – an analysis of various taboos in contemporary western society and their psychological effects” graduation collection analyzed taboos in general and specifically death, addiction and domestic violence.

The word “tacit” means “understood or implied without being stated”. Like a taboo, tacit knowledge is not directly specified or spoken about; only through reactions of other are the moral boundaries established. Taboos act as barriers to separate the permissible from the forbidden and the research connected with the designs should contribute to a better understanding of the complex dance that takes place between societal norms and people´s psychological well-being. Through addressing uncomfortable topics and ending the taboo surrounding them, we can gain more knowledge, empathy and improve available resources to help people deal with sensitive topics.

CHEMICAL HORMONES

The “Hormones” collection is an exploration of the intricate relationship between hormones and emotions. Inspired by the fascinating interplay of hormones such as testosterone, oxytocin, serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine, this fashion collection aims to translate the complex chemistry of our emotions into wearable art. Each hormone represents a unique facet of our emotional landscape, and this collection seeks to capture their essence through innovative design elements. The garments are crafted to reflect the dynamic nature of our emotions, allowing wearers to embrace and express their individual hormonal experiences. The colour palette for this collection will be diverse, reflecting the diverse emotions associated with each hormone.

SOFT MASCULINITY & NEW FEMININITY

This concept emerged from the absence of colorful clothing options available for males. The aim of the designs is to encourage a more inclusive and open-minded approach towards gender expression. By incorporating outdoor fabrics, vibrant colors, and adaptable designs into men’s apparel, the concept of new masculinity acknowledges and celebrates qualities such as sensitivity, vulnerability, and emotional intelligence. Rejecting the notion that women must conform to notions of delicacy or attractiveness, a new femininity is embraced, emphasizing strength, power, and assertiveness. To cultivate a more empowering understanding of femininity, the concept integrates masculine elements, such as fitted coats with bold, structured shoulders, and an androgynous aesthetic.

ORIGIN

Drawing inspiration from vintage snowsuits and reflecting on my hometown in Switzerland, garments were upcycled to create distinctive new forms. The fusion of a tailored men’s blazer’s structure and the snowsuit’s softness was employed to mirror the characteristics of my parents and the Swiss society. Additionally, Swiss traditional costumes and prints served as inspiration, which were incorporated and modernized into contemporary designs (development of a traditional edelweiss print into a modernized version).

BODY POSITIVITY

In collaboration with Hessnatur’s sustainable fabric, a dress has been designed with the intention of accommodating various body types, drawing inspiration from the body positivity movement. The dress is crafted from 100% sustainable Jersey, which has been dyed using sustainable and natural methods. The aim was to challenge conventional beauty standards and promote inclusivity. Extensive fittings were conducted on diverse body types to ensure a wide range of people could comfortably wear the dress while adhering to sustainability principles. Vibrant colors were chosen to celebrate the idea that we should embrace our bodies without shame and express our true selves. The dress seeks to instill confidence in the wearer, foster acceptance and self-love, and make a distinct statement.

DECADENCE

The assignment entailed the creation of a skirt utilizing only muslin and one additional fabric, with the constraint of excluding any colors. A choice was made among five provided words, and the word “decadence” was interpreted as embracing a grand, unnatural approach that orbits around the body. Extensive research into the origins of the word revealed its dual connotation, encompassing both cultural decline and a maximalist lifestyle. This duality served as inspiration for designing a skirt that embodies two sides, alike to the positive and negative poles of a battery. The design incorporates an asymmetrical skirt, shorter in the front and longer in the back, yet still interconnected. Rather than conforming to the body’s contours, the skirt imparts a shape upon the body, creating a sense of magnification and angularity that aligns with the maximalism inherent in decadence. While encircling the body like the word “decadence” does, the skirt deliberately avoids direct contact with the wearer, symbolizing the prejudiced assumptions and judgments often associated with decadence. The circle, in this context, represents both protection and confinement at the same time.
